I marshalled for the first time at the BG Energy Challenge 2007 and am really pleased to be back again this year. The handful of BG Group marshals join with the 40 strong regular Challenger World volunteers from all round the country. There's a real mix of ages, backgrounds and event experience but, because you have very set roles and responsibilities throughout the event, you all become close very quickly…...…helped undoubtedly by a few "Teambuilding" rounds in the University bar on the first night!
For most of the event, marshals stay separate from the teams - we have our own uniforms, mealtimes and timetables. Generally you should be prepared for long days: marshals set up, man and clear up event stages. Be prepared for lots of waiting around; sometimes on your own, sometimes in a group. On one stage last year, we were Check Points round the course: 4 hours of sitting on your own waiting for the teams to run past and check in! Bug repellent, ipod, sunglasses and a pack of cards are essential items.
Long days and lots of waiting around might not sound too great but I promise it's not only a good laugh but you're also taking part in a great teambuilding event that raises money for two worthy causes. You get to know all the teams and exchange banter and give them encouragement as they pass by. The marshals all get on well and your days are spent doing everything from filling sandbags, rigging up marquees, rowing boats across rivers and testing the equipment …... plus whilst you need to be reasonably fit, you definitely don’t need to be able to run 5 miles (there's a minibus!) AND you get a free t-shirt.....with MARSHAL on it....
What's not to like?
Just remember to bring flip flops for the shower room and you'll feel right at home.
