RICHARD DUNWOODY HAS THE ENERGY FOR ANOTHER CHALLENGE

19 March 2008

Richard Dunwoody MBE, three times National Hunt Jockey Champion, has just confirmed his participation at this year’s BG Energy Challenge 2008 – UK. As a Sparks patron, the 44 year old will be competing for the Charity team at this year’s event in July, along with representatives from both Sparks and CARE International.

Dunwoody has enjoyed huge success as a professional sportsman accumulating almost 1,900 winners worldwide making him the most successful jump jockey in history. Since his retirement in 1999, he has undertaken numerous challenges for charity including the Race to the Magnetic North Pole and climbing the highest mountain in the Andes. He has just returned from his latest record breaking expedition to the South Pole with American explorer Doug Stoop covering a hazardous 680 mile route that had previously never been successfully attempted.

Richard Dunwoody MBESuccess as a Champion Jockey, coupled with knowledge gained from such challenges have given him a unique insight in peak performance which Richard will be keen to share with all the teams. He said:

“After my expedition to the South Pole, I was keen for another challenge and was delighted to be given the opportunity not only to participate in the BG Energy Challenge, but also to help raise funds for Sparks. Whilst hoping to out perform last year’s representative Steve Backley, I am also looking to help raise public awareness of Sparks and the vital work they do to ensure all babies are given the best chance of being born healthy and staying healthy.”

Having also completed numerous marathons, Richard will undoubtedly be a valuable member of the Charity team and one for other teams to look out for at the finishing line!
