Marshal Diary
Ellie Petit, Company: Explore

12 July 2008

MarshalsDay 1: The teams all arrived high spirited on the first day ready for the BG Energy Challenge 2008 - UK. Before too long some of the teams were trying to prise information from us about their fate over the next few days – some were more subtle than others! Stage One, the night stage, saw us heading down to Plymouth Hoe with all the other Marshals for a 10pm start. A late night was in store, but we’re used to the weird and wonderful hours!

Day 2: Up at 6.30am! Unfortunately the planned kayak stage was cancelled due to high flow rate in the River Tamar following Wednesday’s heavy rain, so we had to quickly shift to Plan B and head to the Plymouth University Main Hall for a mental task.

Stage Three that afternoon meant the teams returned to the slightly muddier setting of Bellever Forest; my course responsibilities at this stage meant that I left the indoor strategy stage before the end to make sure the Forest was ready for the teams when they arrived.

Day 3: Stage Four took the teams to Exeter Racecourse for the highly anticipated Leader’s Challenge – always quite amusing for us marshals! We were up at 5.30am for set up but thankfully we didn’t look as tired as some of the teams! The stage this morning was certain going to test the teams with a combination of running and biking around the forests near Exeter.

My role here centred around branding and helping the Challenger World team to erect all of the BG Group flags and boards at the start / finish point. My afternoon activities were slightly more bizarre – I sat in Plymouth City Centre looking after an ice cream fridge ready to offer the weary competitors a refreshing snack at the finish line! This of course included a taste test! My duties also included setting up for the party tonight, drinks and organizing the band.

The week has gone really well from a Marshal perspective; there are always last minute problems that are out of your control but they were all solved behind the scenes and no major problems arose. Being a marshal is such a social activity, you meet and work with so many people that it’s impossible not to become great friends. So I’ll be back next year and if you fancy becoming a marshal, see you at the bar!
