This weekend 27 teams from companies within the energy industry took part in the three day long BG Energy Challenge 2008 – UK to raise over £190,000 for charity. The funds will be divided between CARE International and Sparks, the overseas development and children’s medical research charities.
The annual event, hosted by global natural gas business BG Group, saw nearly than 200 team members, including global directors from BG Group, KPMG, GDF Britain, Hess and Amec, travel to Plymouth, Devon to take on the series of tough physical, mental and strategic challenges. The teams faced a range of tasks including kayaking, night-time orienteering, mountain biking and at even a Tic-Tac themed task at Exeter Racecourse. After five tough stages the impressive winner was the team from Perenco from Chelsea, London who had shown both mental and physical expertise and unbelievable team spirit throughout the three days of the event. They were followed by Team 9, BG Group Merlions in second place and Team Western Geco in third.
Richard Dunwoody, the most successful jump jockey in history and Leader of the Charity Team said: “It was an unforgettable and incredibly rewarding weekend. The tasks were extremely demanding but through an outstanding show of teamwork and tenacity, all the teams put in a tremendous amount of effort, not least in their fundraising activities. The generous donations made by companies such as BG Group, make a real difference to the lives of so many people around the world and I feel very proud to have participated in an event that is incredibly important to the work of CARE International and Sparks.”
Each of the teams were committed to raising a minimum of £5,000 for charity and many were able to pledge more than double this amount. The £190,000 raised, takes the worldwide BG Energy Challenge series fundraising total to over £4 million. Mark Carne, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Europe, BG Group, said: “The BG Energy Challenge Series creates a unique opportunity for people associated with the Energy sector, to come together outside our normal business, to have fun, to get to know each other and raise money for these deserving causes.”
“This year’s event exceeded all our expectations not only in terms of organisation and participation but most significantly the funds raised for CARE International and Sparks. The bar has been set high for the BG Energy Challenge 2009 – UK but if the commitment and enthusiasm shown by the teams this year are anything to go by, I have no doubt that we will continue to build on our achievements to date.”
The BG Energy Challenge series has been running worldwide for the past twelve years. As well as the UK, events are held annually in Brazil, Egypt, India, Kazakhstan, Trinidad & Tobago, Oman and the US. For full results, images and more information about the BG Energy Challenge Series please visit
