The annual BG Energy Challenge - UK football tournament took place yesterday (Tuesday 22 May) at Palmer Park, Reading. Thirteen teams from Reading based energy Company BG Group as well as a joint charity team participated in the 5-a-side competition to help raise funds for BG Energy Challenge 2007 – UK event charities; CARE International and Sparks. Funds raised from the day will be added to the overall fundraising pool for the BG Group teams participating in this year’s event. The current total stands at an impressive £30,000 with plenty more fundraising events to come in the build up to the event in Stirling on 5 - 8 July.
The BG Energy Challenge 2007 – UK event will see teams from UK companies associated with the energy industry put their employees to the test to raise funds for CARE International and Sparks. Teams from across the sector will face two days of tough physical, mental and strategic challenges all in the aid of raising money for the chosen overseas development and children’s medical research charities.
The final was a closely fought battle between the Desert Rats and the Economists, with the latter eventually emerging with a 2-0 victory. Andrew Hall, who played for the Desert Rats and is also taking part in the BG Energy Challenge 2007 – UK in one of the nine BG teams entered, said:
“It was a great afternoon and a fun way to raise more money for the BG Energy Challenge – UK; it was good to have so many teams taking part to show their support. I am really looking forward to being involved in the event. It is a unique, challenging and fun weekend which is raising money for two fantastic charities.”
CARE International and Sparks lent their support to the fundraising effort by entering a joint charity team in the tournament yesterday narrowly missing getting through to the semi finals.
