Steve Backley, the most successful British javelin thrower in history, has just been announced as a participant and keynote speaker at this year’s BG Energy Challenge 2007 - UK. The annual multi-faceted event, taking place in Stirling, Scotland from the 5 to 8 July, will see teams from across the energy sector face tough physical, mental and strategic challenges all in aid of raising money for Sparks and CARE International, the children’s medical research and overseas development charities.
As a supporter of Sparks, Steve will be representing the Charity Team in the Leaders Challenge. He will also be addressing the participants, providing motivational advice and an insight into the rewards of partaking in such testinglife challenges.
Steve Backley has enjoyed huge success as an athlete, winning an unprecedented four successive European Championships, three Commonwealth gold medals, two Olympic silvers and one Olympic bronze. He said:
“I’m delighted to be involved in the BG Energy Challenge on behalf of Sparks. It is a unique sporting event that combines physical challenge, intelligence, strategy and effective team working. It is also going to be great fun. The fact that the BG Energy Challenge is aiming to raise a lot of money for two great charities serves to make the challenge extra special.”
Sports Presenter Natalie Pinkham will also join Steve on the Charity Team, competing in all the challenges over the three days. She will face a range of tasks as diverse as kayaking, orienteering and mountain biking to code breaking, bridge building and complex construction.
