Women’s Cancer Initiative – Tata Memorial HospitalThe Women’s Cancer Initiative – Tata Memorial Hospital was founded in October 2003 under the aegis of Tata Memorial Hospital, the premier hospital for the treatment of Cancer in India. This initiative engages itself proactively with various issues related to cancers in women. The Board consists of some of the most eminent and reputed oncologists based at The Tata Memorial Hospital and Research Centre. The Foundation has been designed to focus on increasing awareness about the importance of regular check-ups when women reach a particular age. Most of the commonly occurring cancers in women, such as Breast, Cervical and Ovarian Cancer are given prime importance. The Foundation is based at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai which is one of the leading organizations in the country, working on treatment, education and research in the field of cancer. WCI focuses on cancer amongst women from the backward socio-economic regions. The challenge that WCI faces is that despite these women belonging to the most vulnerable group for breast and cervical cancer, most of them don’t even attend any camps owing to lack of awareness and other reasons. WCI is therefore in need of a Mobile Diagnostic Van, fully equipped with screening equipment and tools that can reach more women from the backward socio-economic regions It is hoped that with the help of funds from the BG Energy Challenge, the mobile diagnostic van would become a reality and would not only help spread awareness about cancer among disadvantaged women, but also do on the spot screening and referral leading to free treatment at Tata Memorial.
