This year is a year of firsts for the Hess Squad: it’s our first year entering a girls’ team; it’s a first year that we’ve raised a whopping £15 000 for Sparks; and it’s the first time that we’ve organised a speed dating night as part of our fundraising…! It’s also the first year that we’ve embraced technology with our own Facebook page (www.facebook.com/HessGirls2011) and twitter account (twitter.com/HessGirls2011).
This year the Hess Girls are Clare, Jenni, Nikki, Rachael, Kate and Adriana– half are old hats and half are complete novices to the challenge but we’ve been training hard since we got the team together at the start of 2011.
We’ve had a lot of fun over the past few months getting ready: we’ve been orienteering in Hampstead Heath; canoeing on the Thames in Chiswick; sweating it out in Battersea Park with British Military Fitness and going for group spin classes at the Virgin Active on the Strand.
It’s been intense! We’re also very international with our training – Adriana has been based in Hess’s Copenhagen office for the past few months and has been working hard. She even took part in her first ever 50km cycle race in which she came 59th out of 656 participants – what a star!
For our fundraising we’ve added a bit of a girly touch to our normal activities. In addition to the ever-popular pub quizzes, jeans days and wine raffles, we organised two ‘afternoon teas’ where, for £1.50 people, could purchase a cup of tea and a homemade bun (Kate’s amazing cupcakes disappeared in no time at all!). Jenni organised two Speed Dating evenings (aptly named ‘Sparks’), which brought together a total of 26 loved-up couples in the incredibly stylish Jewel Bar in Covent Garden and raised over £500.
